4 in 9 Quilt

52" x 52"

In this six-session class we will make this small quilt; made in the fabrics of your choice, your quilt can be a lap quilt, a holiday decoration, a baby quilt, or a wall hanging.

Class Description

This six-session class yields a finished quilt measuring about 55” x 55”. Made in your own colors, this could be a lap quilt, a baby quilt, a wall decoration, or a decorative throw for the holidays. The pattern consists of pieced blocks alternating with plain blocks, surrounded by two borders. The quilt top will be pieced by machine. Our sample quilt is machine quilted, but you may quilt some or all of yours by hand if you prefer.

Class will cover:

    o Anatomy of a quilt
    o Basic rotary cutting skills
    o Machine piecing skills
    o Strip piecing shortcuts
    o Finishing details

Our first session will meet at an area quilt shop, to get acquainted with supplies and the tools of the trade. The rest of the classes will be held at the University. Note that our class schedule sometimes skips a week: this will allow us to complete more work on our pieces between class sessions.

In the first class we’ll discuss supplies, fabrics, and the components of a basic sewing kit. Students are encouraged to wait until after the first class to purchase supplies and even fabric (unless of course you see just the PERFECT piece and can’t resist). If you want to, bring any supplies or fabric you already own, to determine their suitability for the class.

It’s assumed everyone will have access to a working sewing machine to sew at home between class times, but we’ll make arrangements if you need to rent one.

Materials:

Fabric: up to 8 yards of fabric, which runs $5-10/yard (good quilting fabric is often $9-10)
Thread: $15
Batting: $10-35 (I think we can get this for $10 in most cases, by buying together)

Cutting Equipment:

Rotary cutter: up to $26
Mat: $20-25 (depends on size)(discounts sometimes available at Jo-Ann Fabrics and at Wal-Mart, which is one reason I’d like to have the first class before anyone goes out and buys equipment)
Ruler: $16

Basic Sewing Kit:

Thread, pins, scissors, seam ripper, hand sewing needles & thimble (if you use one), marking tools. We’ll discuss all this and handle examples so you’ll know what supplies are most appropriate for you - and which are necessary and which are optional.

If getting the equipment is a hardship, or if two friends or neighbors or family members are taking the class, you might be able to share a set of cutting equipment.

I'll be travelling September 10-18 and don't expect to have access to my e-mail, but when I return I'll try to add to this page an additional illustration of our quilt project, for you to see how it looks in a completely different color scheme. Check back nearer the end of September!

I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at the first class! If you have questions in the meantime, feel free to email me.
